Occupational Therapy for Dementia and Alzheimer's on the Gold Coast

Author: Rickey Hickman (Snr Occupational Therapist)

Occupational therapists help people living with dementia stay safer at home, keep doing familiar daily activities for longer, and maintain dignity and routine — while giving the family and carers around them practical strategies and real support. At NeuroVita, we provide this care in the home, where it matters most, across the Gold Coast.

What is dementia, and how does it affect everyday life?

Dementia — including Alzheimer's disease — gradually affects memory, thinking and the ability to manage everyday tasks. If you're reading this, there's a good chance you're not the person with the diagnosis, but someone who loves them and is quietly carrying a growing weight.

You've probably started noticing the things that worry you most: the stove left on, the front door unlocked, a near-miss on the back steps. The repeated questions, the confusion about time and place, the moments your mum or dad seems momentarily unsure of where they are. Familiar tasks — making a meal, managing medication, having a shower safely — slowly become harder and riskier. And alongside all of it is your own exhaustion, the strain of watching, worrying and doing more and more, often without much help.

The fears here are some of the heaviest there are: Is it still safe for them to be at home? Are they going to fall, or hurt themselves? How long can we keep them here — and am I going to manage this on my own?

How can occupational therapy help with dementia?

Dementia is progressive, and no one can change that. But occupational therapy can make a genuine, practical difference to safety, daily life and how long someone can stay comfortably at home — and crucially, it supports the carer too.

Making home safer.

This is often the most urgent concern, and it's central to what OT does. We assess the home for the real risks — falls, the stove and appliances, the bathroom, getting in and out safely, wandering — and address them directly through environmental changes, equipment, assistive technology and simplified, safer ways of doing daily tasks.

Helping your loved one stay home for longer.

The fear of "having to put them in a home" weighs on almost every family. While we can never make promises, supporting people to remain living safely in familiar surroundings for as long as possible is exactly what OT works toward — through the right supports, modifications and routines that reduce risk and confusion.

Keeping life familiar and dignified.

Routine and familiar activities are grounding for someone with dementia. OT helps maintain meaningful daily activities, simplify them so they stay achievable, and structure the day and the environment in ways that reduce distress and preserve dignity.

Supporting you, the carer.

This matters enormously. A huge part of dementia OT is equipping families and carers with practical strategies, education and confidence — because the right approach reduces the daily strain and helps you keep going. You shouldn't have to figure this out alone, and you don't have to.

What does working with a NeuroVita OT actually look like?

We come to you. With dementia especially, the home environment is the therapy space — so that's where we work, with minimal disruption to your loved one's routine.

It starts with a free 15-minute phone call, no obligation, where you can talk through what's happening and we can check we're the right fit. We then visit at home and complete an assessment — looking at safety, daily function, the environment, and the needs of both your loved one and you as the carer. Together we set practical goals and build a plan: home modifications, equipment, assistive technology, task simplification, and carer strategies. Then we put it in place and adjust as needs change.

Gentle, practical and respectful — built around your family, not a checklist.

How is OT for Parkinson's funded?

Dementia OT is most commonly funded through My Aged Care or Home Care Packages, with the NDIS or DVA applying in some cases — we'll help you work out the right pathway.

The earlier you act, the more you can protect

With dementia, getting the right supports in place early — before a fall or a crisis forces a decision — is what gives families the best chance of keeping their loved one safe and at home. Waiting rarely makes things easier.

While no one can make guarantees, supporting people to stay living safely at home for as long as possible is exactly what OT works toward, through the right supports and modifications.
